We are back with the next update of our Google Panda series. Let’s take a short review of the last blog on Google Panda update 2.3, 2.4 and 2.5 “A look on Google Panda Update 2.3, 2.4 and update 2.5 with tweaks“. Google Panda update 2.3 was a minor update declared in July 2011. This update has incorporated some new signals to differentiate low quality and high quality websites. Google Panda update 2.4 was released on 12th August 2011 and this update applied for non English queries except Chinese, Japanese and Korean languages. Panda Update 2.5 was confirmed on 28th September 2011 and followed by more tweaks with minor updates.
Google Panda update 3.1
A Googler announced on November 18th, 2011 that one more Panda Update pushed out manually. Initially it was named as Panda Update 3.0 according to series of updates but later on Google confirmed that it is just data refresh, not any algorithm update. It would affect less than 1% queries hence later on it was named as Panda Update 3.1. Though it was a minor data refresh, Google didn’t reveal more information on this update. This update can be considered as warning for site owners. If your website is not a quality website according to Google’s quality guidelines, you will be punished today or tomorrow as Google continues its iteration through indexed websites.
I would like to share shocking news for SEO professionals, happened at the same period of time. This is related to this update and that is the shutdown of Yahoo! Site explorer. Yahoo! Site explorer was useful tool to get into the back-links of the site or a single page. Unfortunately the company decided to shut down Yahoo! Site Explorer and we lost really one useful tool.
Google Panda update 3.2
Google has promised not to do any algorithmic change during holidays and hence Google didn’t make any major change in algorithm for a long period of time. Finally on January 18th, 2012 Google confirmed Google Panda Update 3.2 released an official note on 3rd February. There were other 17 changes made during January month.
Here I want to quote one change, which confirmed the Panda Update. “High-quality sites algorithm improvements. [Launch code names “PPtl” and “Stitch”, project codename “Panda”] In 2011, we launched the Panda algorithm change, targeted at finding more high-quality sites. We improved how Panda interacts with our indexing and ranking systems, making it more integrated into our pipelines. We also released a minor update to refresh the data for Panda.”
The other changes were listed in this note to improve the performance of search engines. Google Panda 3.3 and other 40 changes those Google made
There was an official note from Google to confirm the next Panda Update 3.3 on February 27, 2012. Again Google said that it is just a data refresh and it sounds like the previous update 3.2. With that release, Google has posted one blog with 40 changes they made in the algorithm. I have listed here some of them are to increase user experience and some of them are concern to SERPs. We will discuss SERP related changes here in details in the best possible way to get good visibility in Google Search.
International launch of shopping rich snippet: Under this project Google included and display more data for product or service related search results. It includes prices, availability, rating and user reviews etc. Google crawler finds this information from product or service page itself. If you have website of such kinds, it is better to include all these information which can help you to rank high on SERPs. Improvement to freshness: According to this update, Google displays fresh content first. The news pages, blog pages and all regular updated pages should be optimizing according to Google guidelines to get higher ranks for those pages.Regular posting of latest happening will help you to build reputation in your respective industry.
Improvements to ranking for local search results: This statement suggests“optimize your website for local search”. It is quite simple that your local user is always your potential customer and you need to rank higher in local Google search engine. You have to include some strong signals for Google crawler to find your working area.
One change states Panda Update 3.3 – Just quoting the same Panda update: “This launch refreshes data in the Panda system, making it more accurate and more sensitive to recent changes on the web”.
Link Evaluation method updated: How much link juice a website can pass to external links? Google decided to put more weight on relevant links. We have discussed in earlier blogs that link building requires smart work not hard work so build good quality, natural and relevant links.
Spam update: Google has strengthened algorithm to grasp spammers. Spam means “all the techniques and activities done to fool the search engine to rank higher considered as spamming”.On page activities like keyword stuffing, hidden keywords, lots of hyperlinks etc considered as spamming. Off page activities like link exchange, link wheel, link bait are also techniques of spamming.

Google Panda Update 2.3
Let’s focus on next Panda Updates 2.3, 2.4 and 2.5 in this blog. It is said that Google makes roughly 500 changes in algorithm each year. Official word from Google suggested that Panda update 2.3 was a minor update pushed out manually approximately on 23rd July 2011 (After 5 weeks of previous Panda Update 2.2). This Panda update has incorporated some new signals to differentiate low quality and high quality websites. According to their tracking reports, The Panda Update 2.3 has become little controversial. Few experts in the industry blamed on Google that by this update some of the small websites had lost their traffic and Google has favored the big giants of different fields. Google Panda Update 2.4
Google confirmed Panda Update 2.4 on 12th August, 2011 after 3 weeks gap from the previous update. According to this update Panda algorithm implemented for all other non-English language algorithms. After applying Panda update on English queries, Google decided to apply it for all language queries except Chinese, Japanese and Korean languages. According to official words, Panda Update 2.4 has affected 6-9% on non-English queries, which is less than the 12% queries affected in English. The other minor change tracked by the experts is related to the pages of your website which describe the same thing in a different way. When this is done, user start getting bored and your website will be affected. Thus it is advisable to have single page for each product and service. Just include one page for each product or service and explore it completely in that page only. It doesn’t matter if your website has few pages, but the pages should be having good quality.
Google Panda update 2.5
Google Panda Update 2.5 was confirmed on 28th September, 2011. This Panda Update was followed by few more tweaks with minor updates. Named as Panda update 2.5.1 which was released on 10th October, Panda update 2.5.2 which wasreleased on 13th October and Update 2.5.3 which was released on 19th October.
This Panda Update has affected about 2% queries according to states. Google has warned this as “flux”. Now, here is a question about flux, what is the meaning of flux? Flux means Google reiterated all sites in its index. The website which was penalized by earlier Panda Update was checked again. If penalized websites are changed by the webmasters and improved in quality as per the Google Panda, Google has indexed them again. Google has strengthened its algorithm to catch the low quality websites. Now very few websites are still penalized having low quality.
Google Panda Update 2.5 was major with respect to the traffic (gain or drop) point of view. Many websites lost their traffic and on the contradictory many websites gained traffic those were restructured according to Panda quality guidelines. Some of the biggest losers of this update are named as consumer affairs.com, starpulse.com, aceshowbiz.com etc. On the other side, major gainers were youtube.com, tv.com, ign.com etc.
I would like to discuss a strange case of hubpages.com with you related these updates. It is penalized by earlier Panda Update and after Update 2.5 it gained more traffic then it was getting before Panda Updates.

We are back again to continue the discussion on Google Panda Updates. In our previous blog we have discussed the first Google Panda Farmer Update 1.0. Let’s take a short review of Google Panda update 1.0; Google has blocked mainly three types of websites those are scraper sites, content farms and link farms which are spoiling the search results and ultimately the user experience.
Google’s search engineers are working very hard to find low quality websites by many ways. They thought why not we allow users to do this task? The same thing Google did in the second update of Google Panda that is Panda Update 2.0. The second update taken placed from April 11, 2011 (after the gap of 7-week from 1.0 Panda Update). It was initially implemented for US queries only. According to official state from Google, it has affected nearly 2% of US queries and today it is for across the world for all English queries. It is implied for both English speaking countries and non-English speaking countries for English queries. For example if a searcher belongs to Ireland, and searched in Google.ie for English language result, Google Panda update 2.0 will come in to picture.
In Panda Update 2.0, Google implemented algorithm which incorporate the searcher data while generating SERPs. Google has offered few ways to allow the users to report dirty and irrelevant sites. Google has launched two ways to block the particular websites from the search results. Those are Chrome extension and by blocking directly the link from the search result. Now Google takes it as a single vote against you and those collective votes will affect your position on SERPs. Suppose a user arrived on your website by searching particular query and found that your site is not the one which the person was looking for that is completely waste of time for him. By doing this Google is reducing rankings for law quality websites to provide users high quality websites and good quality content.

How user can block your site from SERP?
Block site directly by clicking on link in Google search
Google allows you to block particular websites by showing them in Google search results. How does the feature of “Blocking site” work? Let’s take an example. You have searched for a query and go to the particular website through the result pages, and you found that the website is not really good and related to your search query. You just go back and will find the button “Block all example.com results” and immediately Google will hide the result coming from a particular domain. At the bottom, you will find Show blocked results and manage blocked sites from where you can manage the results. This facilitates you to control over the Google search results. This is easiest way and supported by almost all latest browsers.

Block website manually
You can block websites manually by setting button of Chrome. For that you need to be log in with you Google account. After searching a query, you will find a setting button at the upper right hand corner on the result page.
By clicking search settings, you will find “Managed Blocked Sites “page of Google. “Manually block a site “option from that page will allow you to block unwanted results.
You can block up to 500 sites by this option. You can block sites from here by manually entering the URL. You can also unblock the website from here only that you have blocked earlier.
Using Google Chrome
Google Chrome development team has specially integrated this function for betterment of search result. You can report issues faced while accessing any website on Google. The procedure is so simple, just click settings>Tools>Report and issue in your Chrome browser.
